VALORANT Agent Unlocks: The 28-Day Rule Your KC Can’t Skip
New VALORANT Agents have a 28-day recruitment window. Learn when Kingdom Credits and tokens work, how XP helps, and what the 10,000 KC cap changes.
A full Kingdom Credits balance does not let you buy a newly released VALORANT Agent immediately. During the first 28 days, the available routes are the Agent Recruitment Event, a VP purchase, or eligible linked Xbox Game Pass benefits. Kingdom Credits and Agent Unlock Tokens become options after that recruitment event ends.
Before buying currency, check whether you are facing a release-window restriction or a genuine balance shortage. More KC cannot shorten the window, and buying VP is a choice to unlock sooner—not a requirement for eventually getting the Agent through the regular progression system.

The first 28 days use a different set of unlock options
Riot’s Kingdom Credits FAQ explicitly separates new releases from Agents whose recruitment events have ended. Agent Unlock Tokens are not an exception to that restriction. Saving a token is useful for an eligible Agent, but it does not turn a new release into an immediate token purchase.
Route | During the 28-day recruitment window | After the event ends |
|---|---|---|
Recruitment XP | Progress through the active Agent Recruitment Event. | The special recruitment event has ended. |
VP | Can be used to buy the Agent immediately. | Remains an Agent Store purchase option. |
Kingdom Credits / Unlock Token | Cannot bypass the new-release restriction. | Become available as regular unlock options. |
Linked, active Game Pass benefits | Eligible members can receive new-Agent access. | Access remains dependent on the linked, active benefit. |

Recruitment XP and Kingdom Credits grow alongside each other
The official progression explainer says Agent Recruitment Events activate automatically when a new Agent releases. You do not have to start an old-style Agent Contract first. XP from daily and weekly missions contributes to recruitment, while play also earns Kingdom Credits for later spending.
That means the free recruitment route and saving KC are not competing purchases. You can work toward the current recruitment target while building a balance for another Agent or eligible accessories. If you miss the recruitment XP target, the Agent becomes available through the regular store routes after the event; the missed event is not a permanent loss of access to the character.
Daily checkpoints are especially easy to misread. Each completed checkpoint grants 150 KC, for up to 600 KC across four checkpoints per day. Free-for-all Deathmatch does not advance those checkpoints, even though completing that mode can earn match KC. Team Deathmatch does grant checkpoint progress. “I played Deathmatch” is therefore not enough information to diagnose a missing daily reward.
The 10,000 KC cap changes how much you should save
Kingdom Credits do not expire, but they stop accumulating at 10,000. Sitting at the cap while waiting for a new Agent can prevent you from earning more KC during the remaining recruitment days. It does not make the Agent eligible any sooner. Check the actual unlock options before saving every remaining credit for a purchase the game will not yet permit.

If you are capped and already have the Agents you want, consider only Agent Gear or eligible Accessory Store items you actually value. All KC purchases are non-refundable. Spending merely to create headroom can be wasteful too, so compare the item’s usefulness with the KC you would otherwise stop earning.
Agent Gear and Game Pass access are separate questions
Unlocking Agent Gear does not recruit the Agent for you. Riot requires the associated Agent to be owned or unlocked before that gear can be purchased. Conversely, completing an Agent Recruitment Event unlocks the Agent, not the entire set of themed gear. Treat the character and the cosmetic progression as separate goals.
For Game Pass, Riot’s benefits FAQ says the Riot account must remain linked to an active, eligible membership. Access through that benefit is not the same as permanently buying every Agent. If the membership expires or the accounts are unlinked, the member benefits are lost. Confirm regional eligibility before treating a subscription as your unlock route.
Pay for earlier access only if earlier access matters to you
If you are happy to complete recruitment or wait for the regular KC and token options, there is no reason to buy VP simply because the KC button is unavailable. If immediate access is the goal, check the Agent’s live VP price, your existing balance and any benefits you already have before deciding what is missing.
For a deliberate VP purchase, review the applicable region on the VALORANT Points purchase page. VP is the paid unlock route; it does not convert into KC or remove the 28-day restriction on KC and tokens. The useful choice is between playing toward recruitment, waiting for regular eligibility, and paying for the time you would otherwise wait.
