VALORANT Patch 13.08 Starts Map Rating at Zero: What the New Score Actually Measures

VALORANT Patch 13.08 launches Map Rating as a private 0-to-500 measurement with grades from C to S, and every player begins from a fresh data set. Historical matches do not count. The score uses Overall Win Rate, Attacker Win Rate, Defender Win Rate, and Performance Score, with recent matches weighted more heavily than older ones.

Map Rating is not a replacement for rank, Rank Rating, or matchmaking. It is a map-specific diagnostic available in Competitive and Premier. Its value is not the letter on its own; it is the separation of attack-side, defense-side, and individual-performance signals that can show why one map feels worse than another. Patch 13.08 also changes Performance Score weighting, reworks parts of Corrode, and rotates Bind and Corrode in while Ascent and Split leave Competitive and Deathmatch.

Map Rating is a diagnostic, not a second ranked ladder

Riot's official VALORANT 13.08 patch notes describe Map Rating as a way to see how proficiency on a map changes over time. The number runs from 0 to 500 and is paired with a C-to-S letter grade. It can be viewed in Agent Select, the End of Game screen, and Career, alongside supporting information such as Top Agents.

The feature is private. Other players cannot see the Map Rating information, so it does not become another public badge used to judge a teammate before the round starts. It also does not announce a new matchmaking rule. Competitive rank still answers where an account sits on the ranked ladder; Map Rating answers how that account's results differ by map.

The four inputs explain where the problem is

Overall Win Rate supplies the broad result. It answers whether the team wins on the map, but not which half or personal contribution drives that result. A positive overall number can hide a weak attack side that is repeatedly rescued by strong defense; a negative overall number can hide one competitive half and one severe collapse.

Attacker Win Rate and Defender Win Rate split that outcome. If attack is far below defense, the likely review area is not simply aim. It may be default spacing, information gathering, site-entry sequencing, post-plant conversion, or how often the team commits into stacked defenders. If defense trails, review early deaths, site-hold plans, rotation triggers, retake resources, and whether utility is being spent before it can stop the final hit.

Performance Score adds the individual layer. Riot designed it to recognize different agents and roles while still valuing fragging. A player can therefore see a map where team results are acceptable but personal contribution remains low, or the reverse. That distinction is more actionable than concluding that a map is “bad” because of a few memorable losses.

Recent matches matter more, so the rating can respond to improvement

Patch 13.08 says recent matches contribute more than older matches. That choice keeps Map Rating from becoming a permanent record of how a player performed months ago. A change in agent pool, team role, communication, or map understanding can move the score without waiting for an entire career history to be diluted.

It also makes small samples volatile. Because everyone starts fresh and historical matches are excluded, the first few games can move the display sharply. A grade after one strong night is not proof that the map is solved, just as an early low grade is not a reason to dodge it. The most useful reading begins after enough attack and defense rounds have produced a pattern.

Do not optimize for the number in a way that hurts winning. The four inputs include win rates, and Performance Score is only one part. Playing for safe exit kills, avoiding necessary entry responsibility, or preserving statistics while a round is lost can work against the outcome the system is partly measuring. Use the rating to select review questions, not to dictate every decision.

Performance Score was adjusted before Map Rating launched

Riot also explains that Performance Score and ACS selected the same Match MVP about 70% of the time at launch, which was within expectations because Performance Score includes additional factors. The team nevertheless found edge cases where those extra factors were weighted too aggressively. Adjustments went live during Patch 13.06 and are now relevant because Performance Score feeds Map Rating.

The changes increase the score impact of Damage, Adjusted Kills, and Adjusted Deaths. The adjusted metrics include First Bloods and First Deaths. Riot also made Chamber-specific changes intended to reflect his utility use more accurately. This does not mean every agent has an identical route to a high score; it means the model is being tuned to keep role-aware contribution connected to concrete combat impact.

For review, that means a low Performance Score should not be translated into “get more kills” without context. A first death that prevents the team from executing is different from a traded entry that creates a site. Damage that forces utility or opens a kill is different from harmless late damage. The score points toward a match, while the round replay or timeline explains the decision.

How to use Map Rating without turning it into busywork

Begin with the largest difference among the four inputs. A wide attack-defense gap gives a clearer direction than a small difference in the overall grade. Then compare the Top Agents shown for the map. If the strongest agent is also the one played most often, the problem may be team-side execution rather than agent familiarity. If the player keeps changing agents and the personal score is low, role instability may be the first issue to fix.

Review one repeatable round type, not every round. On attack, that might be the first full-buy default, the first site execute, or the first post-plant loss. On defense, it might be the first time a site anchor dies without a trade or the first retake where key utility is unavailable. One recurring decision produces a better practice target than a general promise to “play the map more.”

After making a change, let several recent matches enter the sample. Since recent results are weighted more, the rating should eventually reflect a real improvement. If the score rises but the underlying win-rate split does not, the individual change may not yet be converting into team rounds. If win rate improves while Performance Score stays flat, better survival, communication, or utility timing may be helping without producing dramatic combat numbers.

Corrode's defender rotations are shorter in 13.08

Corrode receives several layout changes after more than a year of match data. Riot says defender rotations were especially slow, making it difficult to return to sites for retakes. Paths into the back of A Site and B Site have been adjusted to shorten those rotations and help defenders reach retake positions more safely.

That changes the timing assumptions both teams use. Attackers should not rely on old gaps for as long after showing presence on the opposite site. Defenders can delay commitment slightly because the route back is shorter, but a faster path does not replace information. The practical adaptation is to relearn when the second defender can realistically arrive and when attackers must convert site control before a retake forms.

Mid is also less vulnerable to the same wall-spam pattern. The half wall is now metal and moved one meter, giving attackers more room and a route toward A Link without being visible from Top Mid. Boxes in Lower Mid move toward B with a new jump-up, while a raised wall prevents players from simply peeking over from the relocated boxes. These are geometry changes, not a universal attacker buff: they create new paths and sightline rules that both sides must map.

The A Site plant zone reduces distant A Link post-plants

Riot adjusted Corrode's A Site plant zone to make post-plant play from A Link less effective. Teams that relied on a familiar plant spot and then retreated to A Link should confirm which positions still have a usable line to the Spike. A legal plant is not automatically a defendable plant after geometry or zone changes.

This is a strong first practice task for the new act. Enter a custom game, test legal plants, walk the route to A Link, and check whether common utility and weapon angles still connect. Defenders should test the reverse route: where a retaker can tap, where cover breaks the attacker's line, and how the shorter rotation affects arrival time. That information is more valuable than memorizing the patch-note sentence.

Bind and Corrode enter; Ascent and Split leave

Patch 13.08 rotates Bind and Corrode into Competitive and Deathmatch. Ascent and Split leave both queues. Players returning for V26 Act 6 should update warm-up habits accordingly. Deathmatch now offers direct exposure to the same two incoming layouts, making it useful for reacquiring common angles and movement routes before Competitive.

The fresh Map Rating launch and the rotation interact in an important way: no historical match data counts, even on maps a player has known for years. Bind begins building a new rating from current matches, while Corrode begins from current matches on the revised layout. That makes the display a measure of present adaptation, not a reward for an old win rate.

Ascent and Split leaving the queue does not erase their Career history, and it does not mean those maps can never return. It simply means they are not part of the listed Competitive and Deathmatch rotation in 13.08. Avoid spending current practice time on removed maps if the goal is immediate ranked preparation.

Other changes worth knowing

The client receives a new Queue and Mode Select interface for matchmade and custom game types. Career gains a navigation bar that makes pages such as Rank Legacy, Accolades, and Map Rating easier to reach. These changes matter because Map Rating is meant to be revisited over time rather than seen only once after a match.

Riot also begins sharing more enforcement numbers. For the Act 5 detection period from August 18 to October 1, the patch notes list more than 171,000 cheating bans, 54,000 botting bans, 76,000 rank-manipulation bans, 74,000 toxicity or communications-abuse bans, 288,000 repeated AFK or gameplay-abuse bans, and 14,000 bans involving stream-sniping or instalocking tools. Riot says these figures cover accounts fully banned for three days or longer.

The patch fixes several audio issues, a Warden scope-reticle misalignment during full-auto fire, and an incorrect threshold shown for the Masterful accolade. Riot also lists known issues: Team MVP may display incorrectly in Match History, and Range in Queue was disabled while a bugged queue-state problem is tested. These known issues should not be mistaken for Map Rating calculation rules.

Patch features are free; VP remains a cosmetic decision

Map Rating, Performance Score changes, map geometry, and queue rotation are game updates, not paid upgrades. VALORANT Points do not improve the rating or unlock the new measurements. VP remains relevant to optional store cosmetics and passes. Players planning an Act 6 cosmetic purchase can compare the live store price with the VALORANT Points recharge page, but currency should be purchased only after the exact item and regional price are visible in the client.

The useful conclusion from 13.08 is therefore competitive rather than commercial: use the fresh private score to identify a side-specific weakness, relearn Corrode's timings and A Site plants, and move practice toward Bind and Corrode. The number is most valuable when it produces one concrete review question and least valuable when treated as another badge to chase.
