Steam Is Ending Retail Gift Cards: Are Your Codes Still Safe?
Steam is ending its gift-card program at retail stores, but that does not mean an unused card in your drawer suddenly stops working. Valve’s Steam Wallet FAQ says stores will not be restocked as physical cards sell out, with remaining retail stock expected to be gone by the end of 2026. It also says existing gift cards can still be used whenever you choose, subject to local laws.
For the international Steam store, the practical question is which route you need: redeeming a card you already own, adding money to your own Wallet, or sending a new gift to someone else. Those are separate transactions. An announcement about retail stock should not push you into buying extra cards or treating every code as a countdown.

Retail stock is ending; your existing card is a different issue
Valve frames the change as a response to gift-card scams after years of working with retailers and law enforcement and tightening redemption restrictions. The announcement concerns the physical-card retail program. It does not announce the closure of Steam Wallet, a shutdown of digital gifts, or a blanket cancellation of existing cards.
The end-of-2026 wording is an expectation about stock running out, not a single worldwide redemption deadline. A store may run out earlier. If you already have a card, keep the receipt and follow the current redemption requirements rather than assuming the inventory forecast changes the value you own.
Redeem an existing code on the right account and currency
For a code you already own, sign in to the intended account and use Steam’s gift-card and Wallet-code redemption page. Enter the code in the Steam Wallet Code field and select Continue. Check the account before confirming: funds added to a Steam Wallet cannot later be moved or gifted to a different Steam account.
Currency is another separate check. Valve lists limiting redemption to the currency of your Steam Wallet among its anti-scam measures. Do not assume that an old card purchased in another currency can be redeemed merely because existing cards remain valid. Card legitimacy, currency compatibility and the account you are using all still matter.
Digital gift cards continue, with their own checkout rules
Steam’s digital gift-card page remains the official route for sending a new Wallet gift. Its FAQ says you cannot use existing Wallet funds to buy a digital gift card. Some countries also have sending or receiving restrictions, which are shown during checkout and recipient selection.

Once the recipient accepts a digital gift, it is delivered into their Steam Wallet. Steam says a digital gift purchased for a friend in another country is converted into the recipient’s currency. That is a rule for the digital-gift route; it should not be applied to the redemption of a physical card bought in a different currency.
If the recipient wants a particular game, buying that game as a gift is another option Steam describes. Compare the actual product, account region and delivery terms if considering the Steam games listed on Topuplist. A game purchase and a Wallet deposit solve different needs; verify which product you are selecting before payment.
A failed code needs a redemption check, not a panic purchase
Start by checking similar-looking characters, such as O and 0, I and 1, or B and 8. Valve also says retail activation can take several hours after purchase. Keep the original card and receipt rather than discarding them once you have typed the code.
If the problem persists after several hours, Steam asks for a clear photo or scan of the entire back of the Wallet Code and a matching retail receipt. Its guidance makes a specific exception for codes printed directly on receipts: contact the retailer for those, because Steam says it cannot assist with that format.
Choose your next purchase by purpose, not remaining shelf stock
An existing physical card, a newly sent digital gift and a direct game purchase can all lead toward playing a game, but their account and payment rules differ. Use the card you already own through the verified redemption route. For a new gift, inspect the recipient and checkout restrictions. There is no need to buy more physical cards just to preserve access to Steam Wallet.
