Honkai: Star Rail Self-Modeling Resin: Are Two Substats Worth Five?

·Honkai: Star Rail Guides Hub

Five Self-Modeling Resin can guarantee a chosen main stat and two chosen substats on one crafted Relic in Honkai: Star Rail. That is a much more controlled starting piece, but the decision is expensive: specifying the main stat and just one substat costs two Resin instead. The second selected substat raises the total from two to five.

The right choice depends on what is actually missing from your build. A character who cannot get a usable main stat has a different problem from one chasing two particular substats on an already functional set. Spending the maximum on both situations can use up scarce crafting flexibility without solving the most important bottleneck.

Self-Modeling Resin costs: one, two or five

HoYoverse’s Customized Synthesis explanation confirms the two substat-selection tiers below. Main-stat-only customization uses one Self-Modeling Resin, as described in the Relic Crafting system. These are Resin totals for a single craft, not extra charges to add on top of the previous tier.

What the choice solves

Main stat only

1

A missing usable main stat

Main stat + one substat

2

A usable main stat plus one essential substat

Main stat + two substats

5

A particular pair of substats on the same piece

The table compares Self-Modeling Resin only. Relic crafting still has its other displayed material requirements, so check the complete confirmation before synthesizing. The five-Resin option buys control over which stats appear; it does not buy a fully upgraded finished build.

Start with the correct set, slot and main stat. An attractive pair of substats cannot rescue a craft aimed at the wrong slot or a main stat your character does not need. Main-stat selection is the foundation; adding more selected substats should refine a suitable piece rather than distract from it.

Spend five when the second substat has a clear job

A five-Resin craft makes the strongest case when you can name why both selected substats must appear together. For a conventional CRIT-focused damage dealer, that may be a CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG starting pair. For a different build, the important pair may involve SPD, Break Effect or Effect Hit Rate. There is no universal best pair for every character.

Write the requirement in terms of the finished team. Are you repairing the one slot preventing a support from meeting its intended speed? Are you replacing a damage dealer’s last weak piece while preserving the needed main stat? A concrete target makes the premium easier to judge than selecting the most expensive tier because it looks more complete.

Even then, selecting SPD does not specify the final speed value after enhancement. Likewise, putting both CRIT stats on the starting piece does not determine how the subsequent upgrades are distributed. A strong starting combination gives the craft a useful direction; you still need to inspect the upgraded result.

Two cheaper crafts can solve a different problem

Suppose you have five Self-Modeling Resin. One two-substat craft uses the whole balance. Two main-stat-plus-one-substat crafts use four and leave one. Five main-stat-only crafts also use five. This is a comparison of Resin allocation, assuming you have the other required crafting materials; the routes do not offer the same guarantees.

For an account building several characters, spreading the resource can be sensible when multiple empty slots need usable main stats. For a settled roster with one demanding slot left, concentrating the same balance can be more attractive. Neither route proves a higher damage gain without considering the existing pieces and the final enhancement results.

If you also plan an optional purchase through the Honkai: Star Rail purchase page, keep that budget separate from your Relic decision. More paid currency does not itself change the stats chosen in Customized Synthesis or guarantee a favorable enhancement result.

Already have the right stats? Compare Variable Dice first

Variable Dice address a different stage of the problem. They reroll the substat upgrade distribution and values on a fully enhanced level-15 five-star Relic. They do not replace the substat types themselves, and after rolling you can choose between the original result and the rerolled result.

Variable Dice item used to reroll Relic enhancement distribution

If your existing Relic has the wrong substat types, rerolling upgrade distribution cannot create the missing pair. If the types are already suitable and the disappointment is where the upgrades landed, rebuilding from scratch is a different expense from trying a reroll. Diagnose which stage failed before committing your next rare item.

That is the practical test for spending five Resin: the second selected substat should solve a real requirement on a piece you actually need. If the account mainly needs more usable main stats, spread the crafts. If a good existing piece mainly needs a better enhancement outcome, compare the reroll route. Pay for the missing control, not simply the largest number of selected stats.
