Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y will make their global raid debuts during Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global, giving Trainers their first worldwide opportunity to collect the two separate types of Mewtwo Mega Energy.
Mega Mewtwo X will appear in Super Mega Raids on Saturday, July 11, 2026, while Mega Mewtwo Y will take over on Sunday, July 12. Event hours run from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time on both days.
These are not ordinary Mega Raids. Super Mega Raids introduce an enraged phase, protective shields, Link Charges, and a strong emphasis on bringing a Mega-Evolved Pokémon in every Trainer’s battle party.
This guide explains the best Mega Mewtwo counters, each form’s weaknesses, recommended group size, Super Mega Raid mechanics, featured moves, and how Mewtwo Mega Energy X and Y work.
Mega Mewtwo X vs Mega Mewtwo Y
The most important difference is typing. Mega Mewtwo X gains Fighting as a secondary type, changing its weaknesses considerably. Mega Mewtwo Y remains a pure Psychic type and can be countered with the familiar Dark- and Ghost-type teams commonly used against regular Mewtwo.
The official Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global page confirms that Mega Mewtwo X is the Saturday Super Mega Raid boss and Mega Mewtwo Y is the Sunday boss. Both encounters can lead to a Shiny Mewtwo.
Mega Mewtwo X Weaknesses
Mega Mewtwo X is a Psychic- and Fighting-type Pokémon, making it weak to:
Flying-type attacks
Ghost-type attacks
Fairy-type attacks
Its Fighting typing removes the ordinary Psychic-type weakness to Dark and Bug. This means a Dark-heavy Mewtwo team that performs well against Mega Mewtwo Y may perform poorly against Mega Mewtwo X.
For Mega Mewtwo X, build your party around Flying, Ghost, and Fairy damage. Pokémon GO rewards attacks that match the attacker’s own type, so counters should ideally use both a super-effective attack and same-type attack bonus. The official Pokémon GO Help Center explains how type effectiveness and matching attack types influence battle damage.
Best Mega Mewtwo X Counters
The table below is a practical pre-event ranking based on current type matchups, move availability, expected damage, and raid utility. Exact ordering may change when the final Global raid parameters and complete boss move pool are confirmed.
Mega Rayquaza
Mega Rayquaza is likely to be the premier Mega choice for Mega Mewtwo X. Its Flying-type attacks exploit Mewtwo X’s weakness, while its Mega boost benefits other Flying attackers in the lobby.
Dragon Ascent is essential for its best Flying performance. Trainers without the move should not assume that a Dragon-focused Rayquaza set will deliver the same result.
Dawn Wings Necrozma
Dawn Wings Necrozma offers elite Ghost-type damage without occupying the team’s Mega slot. It is particularly valuable when another player is already providing a Flying- or Ghost-type Mega boost.
Its weakness is accessibility. Players who missed the relevant events or lack Fusion Energy may need to rely on Giratina, Gengar, or Chandelure instead.
Mega Gengar
Mega Gengar offers excellent Ghost damage but is less forgiving than bulkier options. Depending on Mega Mewtwo X’s Charged Attack, it may faint quickly.
Use Mega Gengar in coordinated groups seeking fast clears. Mega Gardevoir is generally a safer alternative for less optimized public lobbies.
Best Budget Counters for Mega Mewtwo X
Players without premium Legendary or Mega attackers can use:
Gardevoir with Charm and Dazzling Gleam
Togekiss with Charm and Dazzling Gleam
Gengar with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
Honchkrow with Flying-type attacks
Staraptor with Flying-type attacks
Chandelure with Hex and Shadow Ball
Correct moves matter more than simply selecting the Pokémon with the highest CP. Check both attacks before entering the raid.
Mega Mewtwo Y Weaknesses
Mega Mewtwo Y is a pure Psychic-type Pokémon, so it is weak to:
Dark-type attacks
Ghost-type attacks
Bug-type attacks
Dark attackers are particularly useful because many resist Psychic-type damage while dealing super-effective damage in return. Ghost attackers often provide higher raw damage but may be less durable against certain Mewtwo moves.
Bug attacks are also super effective, although the strongest Bug roster is generally narrower than the available Dark and Ghost options.
Best Mega Mewtwo Y Counters
Mega Tyranitar
Mega Tyranitar is one of the safest Mega choices against Mega Mewtwo Y. It combines strong Dark damage, high durability, Psychic resistance, and a teamwide boost for other Dark-type attacks.
A full lobby using Tyranitar, Hydreigon, and other Dark attackers benefits greatly from having at least one Mega Tyranitar active.
Make sure Tyranitar is using Bite and Brutal Swing. A Rock-type moveset will not exploit Mega Mewtwo Y’s weaknesses.
Dawn Wings Necrozma
Dawn Wings Necrozma is expected to remain one of the strongest individual attackers for this matchup. It works especially well when supported by Mega Gengar, Mega Banette, or another Ghost-boosting Mega Pokémon.
Because it is not itself Mega-Evolved, Dawn Wings Necrozma cannot replace the Mega Pokémon needed for the Super Mega Raid shield phase.
Mega Gengar
Mega Gengar can produce outstanding damage but may be vulnerable to the boss’s attacks. It is best used in larger, organized groups where reducing completion time is more important than minimizing relobbies.
Best Budget Counters for Mega Mewtwo Y
Reliable lower-cost options include:
Tyranitar with Bite and Brutal Swing
Hydreigon with Bite and Brutal Swing
Chandelure with Hex and Shadow Ball
Gengar with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
Weavile with Dark-type attacks
Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play
Scizor with Bug-type attacks
Hydreigon’s Brutal Swing and some other ideal moves may require an Elite TM when they are not available through a current event.
How Many Trainers Are Needed?
Pokémon GO officially recommends challenging a Super Mega Raid with at least seven other Trainers, meaning a minimum group of eight. The announcement also warns that Legendary Mega Pokémon may require more players.
For Mega Mewtwo, a practical target is:
8 Trainers: Only for highly coordinated players with strong level 40–50 counters, correct moves, Mega Pokémon, friendship bonuses, and Party Power.
10–12 Trainers: A more realistic target for experienced groups.
12–15 Trainers: Safer for mixed public lobbies.
15 or more: Recommended when several players have weak teams or no optimized counters.
The higher recommendation is an inference based on Mega Mewtwo being a Legendary Pokémon and the official warning that some Super Mega Raids need more than eight participants. Final difficulty may also depend on the raid timer, shields, boss attacks, and event-specific tuning.
How Super Mega Raid Shields Work
Super Mega Raids include a special enraged phase.
During the battle, the boss may become enraged and gain multiple shields. These shields greatly reduce damage from ordinary attacks. When this happens, a Mega-Evolved Pokémon from your party is automatically sent into battle if one is not already active.
Its next Charged Attack receives a major power increase and can break one shield. Each Trainer can typically destroy only one shield, regardless of how many additional Charged Attacks the Mega Pokémon uses.
This makes group preparation essential:
Every participant should Mega Evolve a suitable Pokémon before entering.
The Mega Pokémon must be included in the saved battle party.
Save or use the automatically prepared Charged Attack when the enraged phase begins.
Continue attacking normally after enough shields have been removed.
Trainers without a Mega Pokémon can wait for the lobby timer and still enter, but they cannot contribute effectively to breaking shields. Pokémon that have undergone Primal Reversion, including Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon, do not count as Mega Pokémon for this mechanic.
Best Mega Pokémon to Bring
For Mega Mewtwo X, prioritize:
Mega Rayquaza for Flying teams
Mega Gengar for Ghost teams
Mega Gardevoir for Fairy teams
Mega Banette as a Ghost alternative
For Mega Mewtwo Y, prioritize:
Mega Tyranitar for Dark teams
Mega Gengar for Ghost teams
Mega Banette for Ghost support
Mega Houndoom when Mega Tyranitar is unavailable
Do not select a Mega only because it is highly leveled. It should contribute meaningful super-effective damage after breaking the shield.
Weather Boosts
Weather can improve your counter team’s attack power.
Against Mega Mewtwo X:
Windy weather boosts Flying attacks.
Fog boosts Ghost attacks.
Cloudy weather boosts Fairy attacks.
Against Mega Mewtwo Y:
Fog boosts Dark and Ghost attacks.
Rainy weather boosts Bug attacks.
Windy weather also boosts Psychic-type Pokémon, meaning the Mewtwo caught after the raid may appear at a higher weather-boosted level. Niantic’s official weather guide confirms the corresponding boosted types for Windy, Fog, Cloudy, and Rainy conditions.
Mewtwo Mega Energy X and Y Explained
Mega Mewtwo uses two separate resources:
Mewtwo Mega Energy X evolves Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo X.
Mewtwo Mega Energy Y evolves Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo Y.
The energy types are not interchangeable. Mega Level progress is also tracked independently, so increasing a Mewtwo’s Mega Mewtwo X level does not increase its Mega Mewtwo Y level.
Pokémon GO has confirmed that both energy types will be obtainable through the corresponding Super Mega Raid and GO Fest Timed Research. Mega Mewtwo also requires substantially more initial energy than ordinary Mega Evolutions.
How Much Mega Energy Does a Raid Award?
The exact amount earned depends on how quickly the raid is completed. Pokémon GO’s Help Center states that Mega Energy rewards are linked to the Speed result displayed after the battle. Super Mega Raids also provide more Mega Energy than standard Mega Raids.
The final Mega Mewtwo reward bands should be verified after the Global raids become active. Avoid planning around unofficial fixed reward numbers before the event begins.
Special Mega Level Bonus
Every Mewtwo caught from a GO Fest Global Super Mega Raid will have at least Mega Level 1 unlocked and can complete its first Mega Evolution without paying the normal initial energy cost.
Lucky Trainers may receive a Mewtwo that already has Mega Level 2 or Mega Level 3. These Pokémon will also be more likely to have high Attack, Defense, and HP.
This bonus applies to the Mewtwo caught from the raid. An older Mewtwo from your storage can still Mega Evolve, but it will require the appropriate initial Mega Energy.
How to Enter a Super Mega Raid
Local and remote entry use different resources.
Local Entry
A local Mega or Super Mega Raid can be entered with:
Link Charges
A Premium Battle Pass
The official Super Mega Raid announcement does not list the daily free Raid Pass as a standard local entry option for this raid category. Check the in-game lobby before committing your event pass plan.
Remote Entry
Remote Super Mega Raids require both:
One Remote Raid Pass
The required number of Link Charges
A Remote Raid Pass alone is not enough. Standard Mega Raids still require only a Remote Raid Pass, but the additional Link Charge requirement applies to Super Mega Raids.
Link Charges can be obtained from weekly challenges, Gifts, selected Campfire meetup check-ins, the in-game shop, and the official Pokémon GO Web Store. The Road of Legends GO Pass will also include Link Charges before the Global event.
How to Find Mega Mewtwo Raids
Super Mega Raids may appear only at selected Gyms. Use the official Pokémon GO map, Campfire, or a registered Community Celebration to locate raids and organize a sufficiently large group.
Do not wait until the final hour to find a lobby. Mega Mewtwo X is limited to Saturday, while Mega Mewtwo Y is limited to Sunday during the Global event.
What Do You Catch After the Raid?
After defeating either Mega form, the Pokémon will revert to regular Mewtwo for the catch encounter. This is the standard behavior for Mega Raid bosses. The Help Center confirms that defeated Mega Pokémon de-Mega Evolve before the encounter.
The featured move depends on the raid:
Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo X raids will know the Fast Attack Counter.
Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo Y raids will know the Charged Attack Psystrike.
Psystrike is the more immediately recognizable prize for most raid-focused players because it is Mewtwo’s signature Psychic attack. Counter offers a new Fast Attack option and additional collection or PvP experimentation value.
Can Mega Mewtwo Be Shiny?
Yes. Both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are marked as Shiny-eligible on the official Global raid list. The catch encounter is with Shiny Mewtwo rather than a permanently Mega-Evolved form.
Mewtwo caught from Super Mega Raids may also have a Special Background. When a Special Background Mewtwo Mega Evolves, its Mega Evolution background gains an additional visual effect.
Before transferring Mewtwo, check for:
Shiny status
Special Background
Attack, Defense, and HP appraisal
Mega Level 2 or 3
Counter
Psystrike
Catching Tips
Mewtwo can be difficult to catch, so avoid rushing your throws.
Use a Golden Razz Berry, wait for Mewtwo’s attack animation, and release an Excellent Curveball as the animation ends. The Road of Legends event will make Premier Balls more effective for post-raid encounters from July 6 through July 12.
The same event period will remove the Remote Raid Pass limit and make Party Power charge faster, both of which can help players completing multiple Mega Mewtwo raids.
Mega Mewtwo X or Y: Which Should You Prioritize?
Choose Mega Mewtwo X when you want:
Mewtwo Mega Energy X
Access to the Psychic/Fighting Mega form
A Mewtwo with Counter
A unique Mega option with Fighting-type utility
Choose Mega Mewtwo Y when you want:
Mewtwo Mega Energy Y
A Psychic-focused Mega attacker
A Mewtwo with Psystrike
A more familiar raid and Master League Mewtwo moveset
Players interested in long-term Mega progression should unlock both. Because their energy and Mega Levels are separate, skipping either event day will leave that form more difficult to develop later.
Resource-limited players should first claim the Global branching Timed Research, review its Mega Mewtwo X or Y choice, and then use raid resources on the energy type not sufficiently covered by the research. The Global event page confirms that the Timed Research requires players to choose between the two forms.
Common Mega Mewtwo Raid Mistakes
Avoid these errors:
Using Dark or Bug teams against Mega Mewtwo X
Forgetting that Mega Mewtwo X is also Fighting type
Entering without a Mega-Evolved Pokémon
Expecting Primal Pokémon to break shields
Starting with only eight poorly prepared players
Forgetting to create a second battle party
Assuming X and Y Mega Energy are interchangeable
Spending all raid resources on Saturday
Attempting remote entry without Link Charges
Transferring Mewtwo before checking its Mega Level
Assuming the catch encounter remains Mega-Evolved

Final Raid Checklist
Before GO Fest begins:
Build separate teams for Mega Mewtwo X and Y.
Mega Evolve one suitable counter for each team.
Prepare a second battle party for quick relobbying.
Collect Link Charges.
Find a group of at least eight—and preferably more—Trainers.
Use Flying, Ghost, or Fairy attacks against X.
Use Dark, Ghost, or Bug attacks against Y.
Raid Mega Mewtwo X on Saturday.
Raid Mega Mewtwo Y on Sunday.
Check every captured Mewtwo for Shiny status, Special Background, IVs, moves, and unlocked Mega Level.
Mega Mewtwo X and Y are among the most important raid debuts of Pokémon GO Fest 2026. Correct counters will help, but success ultimately depends on group size, shield coordination, Mega Pokémon preparation, and having enough Link Charges for every planned raid.
