Part 1: Downloading Douyin on iPhone

Douyin is only available on the China mainland App Store. If your Apple ID is registered in another region, you need to switch it — or create a separate China-region Apple ID.

Method A: Switch your existing Apple ID region

  1. iPhone Settings → tap your name at top → Media & Purchases → View Account

  2. Tap Country/Region → Change to China Mainland

  3. Agree to terms

  4. For payment method, select None (if available) or add a valid Chinese payment method

  5. Fill in a Chinese address (any valid format works for the App Store)

  6. Open App Store → search "抖音" → download

Downside: Switching regions affects all your existing subscriptions and purchases. If you have active Apple subscriptions, this method is not recommended.

This is the safer option — your original Apple ID stays untouched.

  1. Go to appleid.apple.com → Create new Apple ID

  2. Set Country/Region to China Mainland

  3. Use a new email address (not one linked to your current Apple ID)

  4. For payment, select None

  5. Fill in a Chinese address format

  6. On your iPhone: App Store → sign out → sign in with the new China Apple ID

  7. Search "抖音" → download

  8. After download: sign out of the China Apple ID → sign back into your regular Apple ID

  9. Douyin remains installed and usable

Tip: When Douyin needs an update, temporarily sign into the China Apple ID in the App Store, update, then switch back.

Part 2: Downloading Douyin on Android

Android is simpler — you can install Douyin directly via APK without changing any account settings.

  1. Open Chrome on your Android phone

  2. Visit douyin.com/download

  3. The page auto-detects your device and shows a download button

  4. Tap download → the APK file saves to your Downloads folder

  5. If your phone blocks installation: Settings → Security → Enable "Install from unknown sources" (only for your browser)

  6. Open the APK → Install → Open

Important: Only download APK from the official Douyin website or highly trusted sources (e.g., Uptodown). Third-party APK sites may contain modified versions with security risks.

Method B: Third-party app stores

Some Chinese app stores carry Douyin:

  • Wandoujia

  • Tencent MyApp

  • Huawei AppGallery

These require a Chinese app store installation first, so Method A is usually easier.

Part 3: Registering a Douyin Account

You can browse Douyin without an account, but to follow creators, comment, or recharge Diamonds, you need to register.

Option 1: International phone number

Recent versions of Douyin include a country code dropdown (+86 for China). Some international numbers are accepted:

  1. Open Douyin → Login → enter your phone number

  2. Tap the country code dropdown → select your country (e.g., +1 for US, +44 for UK)

  3. Request SMS verification code

  4. Enter the code to complete registration

Note: Not all country codes appear in the list. If yours isn't available, use Option 2 or 3.

Option 2: Third-party login

Douyin supports login via:

  • WeChat — requires a WeChat account

  • QQ — requires a QQ account

  • Apple ID — works on iOS devices

  • Weibo — requires a Weibo account

If you have any of these, tap "Other Login Method" on the login screen.

Option 3: Get a friend to help with verification

If you have a contact in China, ask them to receive the SMS code on their Chinese phone number. After registration, you can update the bound phone number later in Account & Security settings.

FAQ

Can I watch Douyin videos without an account?

Yes. Just download the app and browse. No registration or login required for viewing content.

Can I register Douyin with a non-Chinese phone number?

Some international phone numbers are accepted in the country code dropdown, but not all. If your country code isn't listed, try third-party login (WeChat, QQ, Apple ID) or ask a contact in China to help with verification.

How do I update Douyin if I downloaded it via a China Apple ID?

Sign into the China Apple ID in the App Store, tap Update on Douyin, then switch back to your regular Apple ID. The app stays installed after switching.

Is Douyin safe to use?

Douyin is a legitimate app by ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok. Downloading from the official App Store or Douyin website ensures you get the authentic version.

Why can't I recharge Diamonds inside the Douyin app?

Douyin's in-app payment only accepts Alipay, WeChat Pay, and Chinese UnionPay bank cards. If you don't have access to Chinese payment infrastructure, use Topuplist instead — it accepts Visa, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal.
